Chaco Culture Pueblo del Arroyo Length: 3:18
Description: Chaco Culture National Historical Park
The Chacoan Culture inhabited Chaco Canyon from about 850 A.D. until 1250. Often referred to as the Anasazi and more recently as the Ancient Pueblo Peoples, they were the builders of a massive complex of "Great houses" with significance astronomical alignments, both solar and lunar. Chaco Canyon is believed to have been a ceremonial center. See: http://www.nps.gov/chcu/
You will notice in this video an inordinate interest in the fine stonework. Various types of construction were used at Chaco, consisting of five types. In my opinion, Pueblo del Arroyo exhibits the height of craftsmanship. Note the sharp edges of the corners and the tight fit of the individual stones, and keep in mind that this structure is around 1,000 years old. Compare this to the McElmo style used at Kin Kletso and Casa Chiquita, shown in my video on the Supernova pictograph at Chaco.
All walls we now see were interior. That is to say, they were covered by a finish layer of mortar. That they would cover such a finely crafted wall is interesting. One can see why a "McElmo" wall would be covered but it is puzzling why such fine craftsmanship would be covered. JMHO.
