An unusual and most enjoyable off-patch experience today. Got a pass for the London leg of the globe hopping Red Bull Air Race. Saturday Aug 2nd is the qualifying day and only the first eight go through so there was plenty of excitement to go with the noise and engine smoke that are part of this interesting sport. Ex Top Gun pilots and the like are the only people even remotely qualified for this 200 mph plus timed race down a river, negotiating 20 metre high slalom gates as they speed their way along the course. Weather was a bit chilly early on but by 330 it started to warm up. Was fortunate enough to get on the vehicle laid on to see the pilots and their machines afterwards. Some very capable pilots who are just passionate about what they do. The planes themselves were so shiny and tiny I had to include some pics I took.
