Johnson, Simone de Beauvoir, and Ian Fleming were born, Marc Chagall painted "Nu Rouge", the Tiller Girls appeared on stage in London for the first time, Abdul Hafid beat his old nemesis Abdul Aziz at Marrakesh and proclaimed himself Sultan of Morocco, Hermann Minkowski formulated a four dimensional geometry just as H. Kamerlingh liquified helium, Sven Hedin explored Tibet and Persia, L. H. Baekland invented Bakelite, Ford produced the first "Model T" and General Motors became a company, Cairo University opened and fountain pens came of their own, the spitball was outlawed by baseball regulations, Bela Bartok wrote String Quartet No 1 and the first steel and glass building was built in Berlin, King Carlos I and his Crown Prince were assassinated in Lisbon, so, of course, Manuel II assumed the throne, Wilbur Wright flew 30 miles in 40 minutes, Tzu-Hsi, the Dowager Empress of China, died, as did Grover Cleveland, Matisse coined the term "Cubism", Gertrude Stein wrote "Three Lives" and E. M. S. Out in the middle of nowhere, on the Edge of the World, a big party happened. Those people would have felt right at home here, 100 years later, meeting the residents of today, and watching Rube Wadell, the Extra Action Marching Band and a host of incredible local bands celebrate a century of life on the Lost Coast. What a party it was.....in the good old days....three seconds ago....
