Rio Rita in East Austin on Sixth Street Length: 3:59
Description: Sixth Street east of Interstate 35 is a different world than East Sixth Street west of I-35. It used to be very segregated and perceived as dangerous. I've never felt that way about the danger aspect but it was absolutely very different and run down and ignored and left behind. It started catching up about ten years ago and now it is the coolest, most diverse and eclectic area in Austin, by far. South Austin has my heart but East Austin possesses my soul. I had never gone to the Rosa Rita in its previous incarnation but that wasn't because I didn't try. It was just never open during daylight hours and I'm a daytime person. Now they open at 7 a.m. and provide healthy competition for the trailblazing and trendsetting East Austin Pioneer Coffeehouse known as Cafe Mundi only a block or two away on East Fifth Street along the railroad tracks.
