Length: 9:35
Description: Another chapter in the BOOMER and MELINDA vacation series. This one takes them to Vancouver Island. After trailering their boat on the ferry to the island, they then drove a couple of hours north to the historic town of Telegraph Cove. They rented a house right on the boardwalk with Melinda's Parents (Ken and Anita) and a couple of American friends. The two American brothers (Craig and Mark), got named the "Kelp Brothers" after driving their new boat into a kelp bed and frying the motor! You'll see us towing him back at night from a few miles out.
Telegraph Cove is one of the last remaining boardwalk towns. The 7 days were filled with whale watching, eagle watching, salmon fishing, exploration of an abandoned Indian village, a trip to Robson Bight and much more.
TELEGRAPH COVE INFORMATION
Telegraph Cove is tucked away on the eastern coast of Northern Vancouver Island. In 1912, Telegraph Cove was a one-room station, the northern terminus of a telegraph line that began in Campbell River and stretched from tree to tree along Vancouver Island's east coast.
Many original buildings still stand - the town is built on stilts, raised above the water on pilings and linked by a wooden boardwalk.
Robson Bight Provincial Park, an ecological reserve - where up to 200 Orcas arrive each summer to rub on the barnacle-encrusted rocks at the mouth of the Tsitika River.
Robson Bight offers amazing views of orcas rubbing themselves on barnacle-encrusted rocks, and the breathtaking humpback whale often surfaces. Populations of dolphins, sea lions, seals, porpoises and otters populate the Broughton Archipelago, and the world-class fishing of Blackfish Sound includes stocks of halibut, salmon, sockeye and Coho. Black bears are a common sight, and even the elusive grizzly can be spotted expertly hunting for salmon along the shores. Its historic value, atmospheric location and access to numerous outdoor adventures makes Telegraph Cove one of Canada's must-see vacation destinations.
