Construída para impressionar os visitantes da Exposição Universal de 1889, a Torre Eiffel deveria ter sido uma adenda temporária a Paris. Projectada pelos engenheiro Gustave Eiffel, foi muito criticada pelos estetas do século XIX. A edificação mais alta do Mundo até 1931, data em que foi erguido o Empire State Building em Nova Iorque, a torre é hoje um símbolo de Paris. A introdução de um sistema de iluminação fez com que se destacasse ainda mais.
