In Kashgar, a desert city at the far end of China, donkey carts are still being used as taxis. The donkey taxis run on the same streets as automobiles, tractors, and pedestrians. Drivers seem to know how to overtake donkey taxis without slowing down. The entire bazaar street improvises itself each morning.

When we arrived on July 7th, we asked our taxi (white van) driver to come back and pick us up at the end of the week. He did. What we didn't know was that it was illegal for him to do this. The white vans can take you AWAY from the airport but cannot pick you up. The regular little cabs can take you TO the airport.... more
