Google Earth takes us west out of Truckee, CA and up the notorious Donner Pass, snowsheds and all. It's a pretty close view, about 240 feet above the tracks. Just because you're snowed-in here-and-now doesn't mean you wouldn't have been in similar circumstances there-and-then. I n this case, the passenger train "City of San Francisco" has been stranded in over ten feet of snow after a blizzard within the legendary Donner Pass. The travelers survived this.... more

This is a portion of a 1952 newsreel found at archive.org showing Donner Pass in the Sierra Nevada after a huge snowfall had trapped a train with 222 passengers. Donner Pass, of course, is named for the pioneer party that became trapped there and starved.
