Monkey feeding time at the Mount Takasaki monkey colony in Beppu, Japan. Over 1200 monkeys live on the mountain and mingle freely with visitors. The din of their howls and the sheer number of these beasts scurrying about and tugging at your legs is wonderfully terrifying.

These poor guys live in the mountains around Nikko. Sometimes they descend down into town and forage or whatever. In the Japanese news they're made out to be a huge menace, but the townsfolk we talked to said they're pretty gentle creatures. You need to use a spoon to feed the monkeys or else they can scratch you.... more
